We’ve heard from a number of readers who have encountered problems deleting the $Windows.~BT folder after an administrator password was demanded.
This folder contains the downloaded Windows 10 installation files that may have been stored on your computer without your explicit consent. If your PC update settings are set to install Recommended updates automatically, you may find your PC ready to install Windows 10 unless you clear out the $Windows.~BT folder. Here's how to do it, if you're being blocked by demands for an admin account:
How to delete the $Windows.~BT folder
There are a few solutions you can attempt to solve this issue.
1. Restart and try again
It sounds simple, but first try restarting your PC, then following our instructions for removing the file.
2. Create another Admin account
Alternatively, while logged in as the administrator, try changing another account on the PC so that it’s also an administrator account. Next, follow the steps to delete the Windows 10 folder with this second account. It may be that your main account has a minor corrupted setting that’s creating the problem. There’s no harm having more than one administrator account on your computer.
3. Try again in Safe Mode
Another solution is to run your PC in Safe Mode. Immediately once your computer has been turned on, press and hold the F8 key before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you’ll need to try again. Wait until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then restart your computer.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode. Press Enter.
After this, log on to your computer with an administrator account. When your PC is in Safe Mode, you’ll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your monitor. To exit Safe Mode, restart your PC and let Windows start normally. While in Safe Mode, follow the steps to remove the $Windows.~BT folder.
4. Install GWX Control Panel
If none of this has worked, we recommend installing a third-party tool called GWX Control Panel. It’s a simple, free tool that lets you block Windows 10 from downloading and delete its download folders. Install it for free from the Ultimate Outsider website, where you can also find a simple user guide.
There are various other tools for download at the same link, but only download the GWX Control Panel.

We've highlighted the icons above that you'll need to use after installing this tool. The GWX Control Panel tool makes it simple to control the Windows 10 download process and clear out old files
