Skype is like a regular telephone service, but instead of using a phone network to place a call, you use the internet. You can Skype using your computer, or on a tablet or smartphone.
Calls made to other Skype accounts are free, no matter where they are in the world, or how long you talk for. You can make high-quality video calls and send instant typed messages, too. Read on to discover how to stay connected with Skype.
Free Skype calls
Make video calls – With Skype installed and your contacts set up, you’re set to start making free calls to other Skype users. To make a video call click on the person you want to call on the Contacts tab. Their details will open in a panel on the right where you will have the option to click the Video call button.
You’ll see your own video at the bottom, showing you what the other person sees. When they answer the call you’ll see video from their webcam in the centre of the screen (or a still image will be displayed here if they don’t have a webcam. When you’re finished talking, click the End Call button to hang up.
Make voice calls – Skype lets you make free calls by voice as well as video. To do so click on the person you want to call on the Contacts tab. Next click the Call button when the person’s details open on the right. The call window opens and you’ll hear a ringing tone until the person answers. When you’re finished talking, click the End Call button to hang up.
Answer incoming calls – When someone calls you, a pop-up window appears onscreen. Click the Call button to answer as a voice call or the Video button to let the caller see you on your webcam.
Make cheap Skype calls to landlines and mobiles

Another popular Skype feature is the ability to call landlines and mobile numbers anywhere in the world via the internet. This type of call isn’t free, but it’s a lot cheaper than comparable international calls from your home phone or mobile.
To call other phones from Skype, you first need to buy Skype credits or a monthly subscription that offers the lowest rates for frequent calls. Visit Skype.com to find out the UK and international call rates, and purchase credits or a subscription.
To make a call, sign into Skype and click Call phones. A dial pad is show on the screen where you need to enter the country code (for example, +1 for the United States) followed by the number. If you’re unsure of the country code you can also select the country from the drop-down menu at the top of the dial pad window. Once you’re happy with the number, click the blue Call button.
